So I am emerging from my little…um…hiatus, and I need help with a dilemma. A good dilemma, mind you, but a dilemma nonetheless. Due to the fact that I have the best husband in the world, I am in the very fortunate position of deciding whether I would like to get a brand new, lovely, supercool, digital SLR camera - or go to BlogHer! The Husband worked his butt off to complete a huge project at work - going in at 7 or 8 AM and not coming home until 2 or 3 AM for a week. That means I was a home with The Boy and The Girl for freaking ever with no break. I love them and all, but Mama was on the ledge, if you know what I’m saying. The Husband works for a small company, only four people. They have a policy where they buy themselves fun stuff when they complete a large project by deadline. A kind of bonus. The Husband decided that half of that bonus should go to me because I worked just as hard at home as he did at work. See? He is awesome. The bonus isn’t given as cash, mind you, or of course the bonus would be community bonus. It is given by the owners taking The Husband out and buying the object of choice (they buy RC cars, guns (!!!), RC airplanes, golf clubs or other “frivolous” stuff that they may not normally buy themselves). The Husband told them that half of the bonus is mine, and they are waiting to hear if I want the camera or BlogHer!
Well?!?!? What do I want? I really wanted to go to BlogHer (even if I am a bit scared), but the hotel I wanted to stay at is full. That hotel looks fabulous, while the other hotel just looks …eh. And by the looks of Izzy’s list, everyone will be at the W. But oooh, BlogHer….and ooooh, Chicago! and oooooh, a much needed break.
But look at this camera. This pretty, fancy camera. What do I do?
I know. Tough dilemma to have. Wah wah. Please don’t throw things at me, just help me. What would you do?

And thank you to everyone for all of the kind words regarding the loss of my step-father. I really appreciate it. We are hanging in there, I guess. I’ve been spending my internet time here and here, where everything is cute, fuzzy, and happy. I considered some blog entries about death and religion, but couldn’t quite get the oomph I needed to write them. Maybe later.

Tough decision and I’m the wrong person to ask because I can see both sides.
BlogHer - a once a year event but would be really good.
Camera - something you can use all the time.
But a break away is kind of appealing. Perhaps do that and let your husband do some more long hours so you can get the camera too.

Let me know what you decide. I honestly think that would be a tough choice. (I think Crank Mama has a res at the W and might be looking for a roomie.)
If you do go to Blogher - Whiskey Sky Bar at the W at 8:00p.m. on Thursday night… be there or I take the Cheezeburger away!

Ugh, that IS a dilemna! Don’t ask me, cause I have trouble just decidint what sneakers I should wear in the morning! I didn’t even know BlogHer is in Chicago… thats my hometown, homie! Maybe I should go!
Good luck with the camera-or-conference dilemna. If it was me, I’d probably try to find some way to get both… because that’s how I am… I have to have my cake, and eat it too!

Hi Mel. Since I am still new to blogging, blogher is an unknown. I get it, I think, and any opportunity to have fun in the windy city is a draw.
But, I have that camera. I own it. I love it. I worship it.

BlogHer now. (Hang out with friends at the W, just sleep at the eh.)
Camera for Christmas or your b-day (whichever comes first).
I don’t know how pricey the camera is, but if it’s more than any one person would spend, perhaps you can subtly suggest that a few people go in on it for you. You know…say something like, “Well, I have all I could ever need in all of you. All I want now is a fun toy–this camera.” Or something like that.
You’re a mom and you homeschool, so you’ve probably got a few tricks up your sleeve for getting the kids to do what you want while they think it was their idea all along, right? I think you could probably apply some of those here and score that camera in the next few months.
I know that sounds terribly manipulative, but as long as you only use your powers for good…

Ooh I just checked out the BlogHer thing. Since they have a discount rate for full-time students, I can TOTALLY afford to go! As soon as I get my next Paycheck, I’m going to sign up. If you come, maybe I’ll see you!
AND they’re having some sort of reception in the Children’s Museum… wicked cool! I’ve never been to that one!
AND Navy Pier has the hugest ferris wheel in the world.
On the other hand… BlogHer is only one weekend, whereas you’d get to keep the camera forever!
Ugh…

I would choose blogher… but only because I have that camera… you are in a pickle.

Yay, Mel, you’re back! You’ve been blogging longer than me, so I’d go to BlogHer. You can get the camera next year.
OR
Get the camera, really learn how to use it, and then go to BlogHer next year and take great photos.
OR
I’m totally in the “If you spend it it will come…” frame of mind so do both.
You’re worth it.

There is a nice Westin around the corner (more or less) from there… and they have the same super sweet beds! I am going to Blogher too.. but since I live in Chicago I will be commuting in from my house…

Well, as “Aunt Deborah” is my mother in law and all, I may be disowning her for a while for saying that! Just kidding. Being a photographer, I would obviously say take the camera…and I must be way out of the loop but I have no idea what Blogher is! If its a trip away from home…and that sounds like what it is…then that would be really great for you!
Just FYI…the canon xti is a bit better of a camera but also a little more money and it has this feature that I have heard is priceless~the sensor cleaner. It cleans the sensor automatically! Very cool.

Yay. Welcome back. I will be attached to a newborn during BlogHer, so will be unable to make it (Boo!) You should totally go.
I’m glad you’re coping alright - Ah, Cheezeburger. It is one of my faves.

I guess the real question is which would be most beneficial to you right now? It seems to me the answer would be “trip to Chicago.” Recharge your own personal batteries and use your old camera (if you have one) a little longer.
And remember; the hotel is where you just go to rest. In fact, being in the “lesser” of the two hotels could spur you to spend as little time in the hotel as possible!
Just my thoughts, though.

It looks like I’m too late to vote but I would have said Blogher - for mostly selfish reasons. A camera is good too. Lasts longer.

I’m late as usual. But I wanted to say that I’m glad you are back and I am still so sorry for your loss.
