What’s Next? Locusts?

September 4th, 2007 · 10 Comments

Well, I am so happy to be seeing Tuesday morning. With all the weird happenings this weekend, I was sure it was the end of the world. For starters, The Husband and I had almost 24 hours kid-free. That is definitely a rare occurrence. We went out to dinner and enjoyed real cherry coke…not the chemically created store bought stuff. Yes, we do know how to party. Don’t be jealous. We also saw a movie. I can’t even recall the last grown person movie I saw in a movie theater before this one. Let’s just say it had been years. We saw Superbad, for anyone interested in the minutiae of my life. It was not bad. It did have its funny parts. It would be the best movie ever…if I were a 21 year old frat guy. But it was a movie! That did not feature animated animals! Did I mention we were kid-free?!?!

But wait!….there’s still more weirdness. Like the earthquake! Oh yes, the earthquake. And not one of those nice rolling ones either. No, it was one of the loud bang ones. Hate those. It was only a 4.7, but I’m fairly certain its epicenter was my master bathroom. It did scare me a bit, and a few minutes later, I was surprised at the fact that my legs were shaking……yeah, that would have been the 2.5 aftershock.

So, you can see we had a bit of an odd weekend, right? Oh, but there’s more. How about the heat? The evil, eye-ball frying, sweat-inducing, miserable, miserable heat. It was 112 degrees here on Sunday. No joke. I wish I were joking. I do not enjoy the heat. If I wanted to live where my perspiration fizzled off into little puffs of steam, I would have moved to Vegas or Palm Springs. Anything over 85 degrees makes me cranky. I do not like to sweat. The weather we had here over the weekend was just plain uncalled for.

So, no kids…earthquakes….soul-crushing heat. Some weekend, right? But there’s more! How about a fire? The Husband and I were enjoying the last bits of our freedom…by soaking up the super chilled air in the sporting goods store. As we walked out the door into the parking lot (and our eyelashes melted closed from the wall of heat we were met with), we saw the smoke. And it smelled like a BBQ…no, more like a fire pit at the beach. And tiny specks of ash floated down like snowflakes. Tiny, gray, stinky snowflakes. “Hmmm, that looks close. Wonder where it is?” we wondered. Yeah, that would be in the hills right behind our house. Not “holy crap!-evacuate now!-close”, but really, really close. Of course we went for a closer look, and were astounded at the sight of water dropping helicopters filling up in the pond of the golf course at the retirement resort behind us. Swooping in about 50 yards from where we stopped our car in the middle of the road, mouths agape. And I didn’t have my camera. Argh.

And then…what was that noise? Helicopters? No….thunder! What? Yep, thunder, lightning, rain. It was so oppressively humid that the atmosphere finally burst, I suppose. To many of you, summer storms are a familiar thing, but where I am in California, they are pretty darn rare.

So, here’s to Tuesday…and the dawn of a weird-free week. Even if it is supposed to be 109 degrees.

So how was your weekend?

The Husband and I all hyped up on cherry coke. Yes, just plain old cherry coke.

We look drunk anyway, though. Especially The Husband. Check out those squrinchy eyes. I wish I could have posted some of our 900 other attempts at getting a decent photo, but The Husband would kill me. He looks progressively more and more drunk in each one.

I worked, worked, and worked all weekend. So I’m off today and tomorrow and just gonna chill out and get reacquainted with my lazy inner being.

Weeell, Cherry Coke sometimes works in mysterious ways…

Wow, seems like you had lots o’ fun over the weekend!

Nothing really interesting happened here in Germany - no storm, no earthquake, no farting children - but me and the BF did clean up our home office/library! That’s… something, right? (Actually it’s not, I know.) Plus the BF farted a lot over the weekend - and I think that pretty much resembles a natural disaster…

What an insane weekend. Are you sure you didn’t have some help imagining it all (the husband’s eyes look a bit squinty - perhaps you are leaving out a very important part of the evening?)

Kidding, kidding. Hope your week is more normal.

You are one gorgeous mama! The hubs and I got drunk off slushies a couple nights ago! LOL! And, wow, 100+ temps. We had that last week and our air conditioning crapped out at the same time. Luckily, it’s now fixed but the temps have fallen down to around 80 degrees here right now but is supposed to be about 95 today.

BTW, thanks for the comment and thanks for understanding! ;)

Way cute Pho-Tohz, Mel. Way, way. And no, I didn’t hear about the quake. I’ve had the AC on for three days straight and am trying not to move my body any more than I have to. Absolutely can’t wait for the gas & electric bill at the end of the month, yanno? Cherry coke, huh? and Squrincy eyes? Hmmm…

You live in California and you don’t like heat. hmmmm, I think there’s a paradox or something in there somewhere.
I’m in Iowa and it almost never makes it to 100, however it does make it to -30 on a regular basis in the winter.

    I happen to detest that.

Tell you what. You move here and I’ll move there and we’ll both be relatively happy. You just have to take the Husband, the Boy, and the Girl with you. I, in turn, promise to bring My Darling Wife, the Rockstar, and the Dinosaur with me. Both of the last two, incidentally, have Aspergers Syndrome. So we feel your pain sister.

LOL. Sounds like me and my husband going out for a wild nmight on the town. This past weekend my husband and I got a night off from the kids as well, via my generous parents. We went out for ice cream and sat in the park watching teenagers. We couldn’t even make it to a movie, we were too tired. So, kudos to you to actually making it to a grown-up flick.

So, plagues are typically used to convince oppressive god-kings to release their slaves. Do you have any, uh, thing to tell us? Any nations digging rocks out of your basement, erecting plinths in your honor? Mmm?
